Planet FailAccording to Planet Fitness CEO Mike Grondahl, personal training is little more than “renting a friend”. Grondahl observes in his letter written to PF owners that selling personal training is a fraud, and doesn’t fit the “no judgement zone” model. He continues, stating that the company plans to use the no personal training rule as a marketing tool.

Oh boy, where do I begin?

First and foremost let me say that after training over 25,000+ sessions, and working with hundreds of people in my career, I’ve built a pretty strong case against Grondahl’s assertion that selling personal training is a fraud, and condescending. The life altering results I’ve produced over the years fly in the face of the ignorant mess that is currently coming out of his mouth. The whole Planet Fitness business model is the biggest  fraud in the fitness industry. Let’s barebones a facility selling a bogus “no judgement” philosophy, fill it up with as many people as we can paying ten bucks a month, and bank on the fact that without proper guidance most of them will never use their memberships. Rinse, repeat.

For this guy to talk this way about personal training displays an uncanny ignorance of what the proven benefits are, and his complete lack of understanding of how to make it work in a club. A strong group exercise program, and a solid, systemized personal training program are the 2 biggest member retention tools in a club. Having skilled, qualified personal trainers servicing your members fitness goals is most often the tipping point of their success in the club. This is common knowledge in our industry, and for Grondahl not to acknowledge this, and built on it makes me wonder how he became CEO of a major club chain.

While I agree that overly agressive personal trainers is not condusive to a member’s positive experience in a club, delivering results is. It takes a the right trainers being trained and led by the right managers to produce consistent results and enhance the total member experience to make your club a success. If you aren’t prepared to do that, then I guess stopping personal training in your clubs makes sense. But to me, that’s the laziest move to make. The best way to create raving fans of your club is to deliver results, so to use no personal trainers as a marketing tool is essentially saying “we don’t care about helping you reach your goals, join our club”.

Good luck Planet Fitness, I believe you’ll be out of business within ten years. More and more clubs are figuring out that the best way to beat your club is not to reduce prices, but to add more value to their memberships. I believe with this bonehead move, you’ll soon be the ones playing catch up.

101.5 Bob Rocks

101.5 Bob does rock indeed...especially when training with K and C. That make any sense at all? Move on...

We are having a little friendly 4 week fitness competition between some of the personalities of 101.5 “Bob Rocks” and having fun doing it. Last week, DJ’s Ginger Bob and Crazy Bob joined sales assassin Kelsi Waltmire, and station manager Blake “True-Man” Truman for the first week of our new “Metabolic Mayhem” rapid fat loss program. Hillarity soon ensued…

At the end of the 4 weeks, we’re going to have a fitness test to see which of the Bobs has lost the most bodyfat, and who can do the most pushups, burpees, and crunches in a minute for each exercise. I’ll be posting pictures and updates all week of the Bob Rocks crew in action, and listen to 101.5 for the next few weeks as Kat and I talk smack on the slackers.

Do supplement companies really want to help our seniors?

In my latest column for the Herald Mail, I told you about the Congressional investigation of several supplement manufacturers who seem to be targeting our nations seniors with false, or unproven claims on their products.

The report from that investigation didn’t name names of those companies. But being the kind of guy that I am, I did some digging, and found some companies who make these wild claims about their products, and now I present them to you. These companies may or may not be the ones under federal investigation, but they claim to cure everything from diabetes all the way up to cancer. Shameful. Check out the links, read the claims then leave your comments below.

Here we go…

Garlic Supplement

Ginseng Supplement

Ginko Biloba Supplement

Nothing witty to put here. Just thought it was a funny picture...

If you are anything like me, you want to comletely seperate yourself from the world when you are getting psyched for a particularly tough workout. Sometimes I get really into my music and I start doing my moves all around the squat rack. I don’t care. Laugh if you want, I’m still squatting over 400 pounds ;P

So I though I’d share the top tracks in my mp3 player with you to give you an idea what’s going on in my head if you see me looking like I’m getting ready for a stage dive. I think you’ll be surprised what I listen to…

1. Rage Against The Machine:  Microphone Fiend

I thought noone could do this song better than Rakim (if you don’t know who Rakim is, you should be ashamed), but this always gets me good to go. I got past a major 2 week long sticking point on the bench press the first time I played it. Cop it ASAP

2. Pantera: Walk

This used to be my ring theme back in my pro-wrestling heyday.  This song never fails to get me pumped for training day. If you download it, resist the urge to punch someone in the face the first time you play it.

Audioslave: Cochise

This is what would happen if  you were to cross Rage Against The Machine with the lead singer from Soundgarden. Wait, that is Rage Against The Machine with Chris Cornell from Soundgarden. This is the first single from their debut album, and it never gets old. This song rocks, just like most of their stuff.

Da T.R.U.T.H.: Who am I?

If this Philadelphia MC did mainstream music, he’d be the next Jay-Z. The fact that he makes sick tracks like this that glorify God  gets him major respect points from me. I used to dismiss christian Hip Hop until I discovered this guy a few years ago, now it’s pretty much the only hip hop I listen to aside from anything by Jay-Z. Check it. You’ll see…

Jay-Z: Roc Boys

Off the “American Gangster” album, this song just makes me want to move. I love the horns and the whole party vibe of the track. I have a lot of Jay-Z’s stuff on the ready, but some reason, this is the song that always makes it into the workout playlist rotation.

Every song from the first four “Rocky” movies

The training montages were the best parts of these movies, and still get me pumped up for training. These movies had a way of making the filthiest, nastiest, back alley gyms look like the place to train. they also make it look like you can train for about 2 weeks and be ready to fight a giant Russian boxer who beat your friend to death. Oh well, great music…

So there is just a sample of what’s currently on my workout mp3 playlist. what’s on yours? Is there something I HAVE to get? Let me know. Leave your comments below. I’ll listen to every track, and give a free 30 minute fitness phone consultation to the person that gives me the best song!
